1. Rationale
There is a growing interest in water resources as an issue, nationally and locally. With the projected rise in population in the County and within the Thames Basin, there is renewed pressure on finite water resources against a rising demand. Environmental impacts are growing, threatening habitats and reducing biodiversity. The extremes of the current climate exacerbate existing problems but future climate change is foreseen to worsen conditions. However, until water presents a problem, it is often forgotten - a perpetual supply of wholesome water, effective sanitation and freedom from floods are the expected norm. World Water Day offers an opportunity to raise local awareness of the value of water.

2. Aims of the Seminar
The seminar will help raise the profile of water as an issue and explore changing attitudes to water. The various supply and demand options will be explored, in order to satisfy expectations about the future of water in  and in the Thames Basin in general.
The seminar will bring together policy makers, business and agricultural interests, water practitioners and researchers with members of the public and the media to inform and discuss the main water resources issues being faced in  at present time and in those likely to arise in the near future.
An edited report will be produced on the proceedings which will be disseminated widely.
